Entry Requirements:
To be considered for this course, you must meet the entry requirements:
  • Be at least 18 years of age;
  • Have successfully completed VCE or completion of Year 12 (or overseas equivalent)
  • Individuals whose first language is not English are required to demonstrate an IELTS (Academic) score of 6.5 or equivalent. IELTS 7 and above is preferred.
  • Demonstrated level of spoken and written English upon completion of a Literacy and Numeracy assessment. Australian Core Skills Framework Level 4.
This nationally recognised qualification provides people with practical skills in teaching English to speakers of other languages. The course aims to develop candidates language analysis skills and awareness of cultural factors in language learning. It also addresses the skills and knowledge requirements for designing and delivering an English Language training program for learners from Culturally and Linguistically Diverse backgrounds (CALD).

Upon graduation, candidates will be able to plan lessons for learners at different levels, in a variety of contexts, design and adapt classroom materials, conduct lessons effectively and analyse language for teaching purposes.

How will I be assessed?
You will be assessed to show that you have achieved the skills and knowledge required by the course. Assessment may include written, oral or practical assessment methods. You will know in advance about the type of assessment and how it will operate. There is the opportunity for reassessment and appeal and you will be given this information.

Your total course fee will typically include your tuition fee (table 1), any applicable consumables and/or material fees (table 2) and non-tuition fees such as student support fees (table 3).
What employment opportunities will I have?
This course may lead to employment in teaching English in Australia or overseas. The Certificate IV in Teaching English to Speakers Of Other Languages (TESOL) is recognised by the National English Teaching Accreditation Scheme (NEAS) as a minimum qualification for teaching in an ELICOS program or a Department of Immigration and Multicultural Affairs (DIMA) funded program in Australia.

What skills will I have when I complete this course?
You will gain skills in planning lessons for learners at different levels in a variety of contexts. You will learn to design and adapt classroom materials, conduct lessons effectively and analyse language for teaching purposes.

What qualifications will I receive?
On successful completion of the course you will be awarded the Certificate IV in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other languages). As part of the Australian Qualifications Framework this program is nationally recognised.

What opportunities for further studies will I have?
This course will lead to higher level studies in the Diploma of TESOL. Credit transfers may be available into a degree or masters level.
